BC Conservative candidate for Salmon Arm-Shuswap wants to be a strong voice for the region

David Williams, the BC Conservative party candidate for the Salmon Arm-Shuswap riding, believes the region needs a strong voice in provincial government — and he wants to be that voice as the next MLA.


“I believe this area has immense potential given the right circumstances,” Williams said.

“There are different aspects within this region that are important to each community, which I believe you have to have a strong voice that's both transparent and accountable.”


Williams said healthcare has been a key issue for the BC Conservatives adding the Shuswap needs more doctors and nurses.


“What we need to do is actually get more doctors and nurses trained and wanting to live in this area,” he said. “Besides that, we also need to strengthen home care for seniors.”


He said the BC Conservatives' new patients first policy would allow patients to pay for private healthcare options using their regular public medical service plan.


Williams said he is also eager to tackle crime in the Shuswap, adding he believes mandatory sentencing is needed to stop repeat offenders.


“What we need to do is we need to get the prolific criminals off the street, right off the get go,” he said. “20 per cent of the criminals commit 80 per cent of the crime. Those 20 per cent need to be off the street.”


Williams said part of tackling increasing crime means dealing with drugs and housing.


“We have to get the drug problem under control so that these criminals are actually getting rehabilitation,” he said. He noted housing affordability is another issue exacerbating the problem.


“We don't want no more tent cities, we have to find ways to house these people,” Williams said. “When you're living in despair and you have no hope, it leads to crime.”

Williams said his party’s plan for tax rebates will improve housing affordability.

“We've introduced the Rustad rebate, which will give every family $1,500 of tax deductions to go towards helping them with either rent or their mortgage,” he said. “And it goes for renters or homeowners alike.” ...
