Spring 2025 at the Legislature was marked by significant activity, with much focus on housing, healthcare, and public safety. All of which directly impacts our riding. Here's a quick summary of notable changes:
HOUSING:
With the introduction of the BC Builds program the aim is to accelerate the construction of affordable homes for middle-income earners. You can learn more HERE.
B.C. continues to have some of the most unaffordable housing in North America but changing this is a top priority. We will continue to push our current government to make necessary changes and invest in our Province so we can see more and more people achieve their dream of owning a home.
SHORT TERM RENTAL:
Legislation was passed to restrict short-term rentals, permit multiplexes on single-home lots, and relax zoning requirements to support increased housing density, particularly in areas served by public transit.
These measures (BC Builds & the restriction on short-term rentals) are projected to facilitate the creation of approximately 130,000 new homes over the next decade. Although that can sound encouraging, with our Provinces population projected to grow at a rate of 100,000+ people (the majority from immigration), more still needs to be done to address the housing issue.
HEALTHCARE:
In healthcare, the government opened new urgent and primary care centres across the province and made progress on hospital projects in rapidly growing communities such as Surrey and Richmond. Additionally, 700 doctors and 6,300 nurses have been welcomed into B.C.'s healthcare system over the past year. However, with staffing shortages across the Province and longer than ideal wait times, more needs to be done to protect the livlihoods of current and future staff in the medical field.
